Becoming a Student - Examination


As a registered student member of the institute you are qualified to write examination and apply for exemption if necessary. The Capacity Building and Certification Division is in charge of conducting/administering the entire stages of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria examinations.

Although the history of the CIBN dates back to November, 1963, when it was established as a local centre of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London, its first indigenous examination was held in the Foundation stage in April 1978 while the Professional examination was held for the first time in April 1984 with two candidates qualifying as Associates. Before 1978, the Institute only conducted the examination on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, London.

The examination is in three stages viz: Diploma, Intermediate Professional and Chartered Banker Levels. Successful completion of the three stages of the examination will lead to the award of the Certificate known as the Associateship of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB).
 
Objectives of the Examination
One of the basic objectives of the Institute is promoting Banking Education in Nigeria through conducting banking examinations. The objective of promoting banking education is to amongst others:
  1. Uphold and ensure the observance of professional ethics and tradition in the banking and financial industry;
  2. Promote general advancement of banking practice in banks and their branches;
  3. Facilitate good rapport among bankers on matters of common interest;
  4. Keeping abreast of the latest developments in the banking industry;
  5. Promote and ensure the highest level of adherence to sound and generally accepted banking practices; and
  6. Uphold the integrity of the banking profession in order to instill public confidence in the banking system.

Mode of Registration
All Candidates are expected to register through the CIBN Website http://www.cibng.org. Candidates are to ensure the correct payment of their examination fees, annual subscriptions and any other required fees on or before registering for the examinations.
Payment can be made within the following during registration:
  • Interswitch/Verve ATM Card
  • CIBN eWallet Payment System (CIBN ETRANZACT PAYOUTLET)
Special Instructions
  • Candidates for the examinations must have registered as student members before the intended Examinations.Membership registration numbers obtained will be used as the Examination Numbers.
  • Candidates must ensure that payments for Examinations are made into the Exam Portal only as any payment in error into other portals such as Exemption, Annual Subscription etc., will not be counted for exam purposes.
  • Application for changes of the Examination Center must be received by the Institute on or before the close of exam registration
  • Only candidates with dockets authenticated by a Fellow or Associate or Honorary Senior member of the Institute or Branch Managers of Bankers or Heads of Departments of Tertiary Institutions will be allowed into the Examination Halls
  • Any interested candidate can register for the Microfinance Certification Examinations
  • The sum of =N=2,500.00 registration fee and =N=2,500.00 per subject is payable as the re-sit fee for candidates with references in levels 1 & 2 of the Microfinance Certification.
  • MCP candidates should download the Microfinance Certifocation Examination form from the Institute's Website.
  • Completed MCP Examination Forms and bank drafts for re-sit papers (where applicable) must be received on or before the examination.
